NORTH JERSEY -- It's amazing the subjects you can cover in conversation when you show up to cover a varsity basketball game on time only to find out that the JV game started late and is only at halftime. When said JV game proceeds to go into overtime, you can really go deep.
Such was the case on Tuesday night with St. Peter's Prep boys basketball coach Mike Kelly. In fact, the conversation was so packed with interesting topics, that we decided to bring it to the air.
Kelly, whose team was packed with Division 1 talent last year, showed up with eight players in uniform for the North Bergen game. Myles Davis, one of the top shooters in the nation, and Keith Lumpkin, a 6-foot-8 center who has signed to play football at Rutgers, are seniors this year, but are not on the Prep roster.
How does the AAU circuit effect Jersey City high school hoops? How is it coaching a paraochial school right down the block from St. Anthony? How much have players like Kevin Walker and Chase Fluelen had to overcome to reach their senior seasons at Prep? It's not our usual interview full of laughs, but there are some of those to.
